True North
Watercolor and ballpoint pen. Portrait of Jenny Tsui from an old shoot. Thinking about it, Jenny was probably the third girl I ever photographed solely for reference. I’m still using shots to this day and they are probably 3 years old now.

Slaughterhouse 1
Watercolor and acrylic on illustration board, backed by foam core, framed in a shadow box, 2012. So I’ll do a three piece series with depicting scenes that really don’t have a lot to do with each other but maybe tell a quick story. I got the idea from one of my favorite novels (of all time) Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut. Specifically I got the idea from Billy Pilgrim’s investigation of Tralfamadorian literature, because instead coherent, linear stories a Tralfamadorian novel is just a series of scenes described by the author. That’s essentially what is going on here.

Nights Become Days
5”x 10”, Watercolor, ink and watercolor pencil on illustration board, 2012. Portrait of the lovely Alysha based on an image by Wolf189. Alysha is quite the little firecracker. Wander over to Wolf’s blog to catch as many of these images as possible, Alysha has quite the Grace Kelly thing going on. My only regret in this piece was I should have used the brush all the way through, pens be damned.

Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
5 x 7, watercolor and india on bristol board, 2012. A personal favorite of mine, American Sci Fi writer Kurt Vonnegut; author of Slaughterhouse Five, Cat’s Cradle, Timequake, and Man Without A Country. This is a quick portrait I did on Monday afternoon to get myself working on something or anything frankly. Once I am up and walking I’ll be gifting this to a friend of mine. So it goes.

The Riverbed
5” x 7”, watercolor, gesso & india on board, 2012. Because I just don’t sleep, I gave up on it, I pumped out this portrait on Wednesday morning between 2 and 4am. My peak hours. I swear I only meant to do the pencil, then I only meant to ink it, but then one color couldn’t hurt… and so on and so forth. Strangely enough the reference also comes from a favorite medium of mine; girls taking their picture with their phones. The subject is one of the wonderful young women of tumblr: Mica. She was also the subject of a previous piece called Hydra. She is also top notch at Draw Something.
